On the Science and Art of Longevity, How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, and the Start-Up of You
Books that changed my life
Hello all!
Here is your weekly dose of books that changed my life.
1. Health and wellness
Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity
Summary
This is probably the best, most practical book I’ve read on longevity and healthspan. I’ve been following Attia for quite some time and could never truly get onboard with his philosophy–it was always a bit too complex and, frankly, impractical. But once he turned 50-years-old, his thinking simplified and he seems to have found a strategy and voice that I can work with (and so can you). If your health matters to you, this is a must read. It is never too late to focus on your health–physical and mental. I’ve learned that our bodies are amazingly resilient and can withstand years of poor nutrition, poor sleep, and little exercise. But if you give it what it needs–exercise, nutritious foods, sleep, relationships–your body will return the favor and you’ll feel the best you’ve ever felt. It does not take any special diets or training plans to make this change. All it takes is for you to get started. The rest will take care of itself.
Insight: Regular exercisers live as much as a decade longer than sedentary people.
Insight: I now consider exercise to to be the most potent longevity drug in our arsenal.
Quote: There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they're falling in. -Bishop Desmond Tutu
Author: Peter Attia
Themes: Health and wellness, Living a full life
My personal notes from the book
2. Leadership
Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win
Summary
The author, Jocko Willink, was a U.S. Navy SEAL officer who led the most highly decorated special forces unit in the Iraq War. This book applies the leadership skills that Willink used in Iraq to the business world. And if you have kids, you should check out his series Way of the Warrior Kid.
Principle: Relax. Look around. Make a call.
Insight: When things go wrong, and they will, complexity compounds issues that can spiral out of control into total disaster. Plans and orders must be communicated in a manner that is simple, clear, and concise. Everyone that is part of a mission must know and understand his or her role in the mission and what to do in the event of likely contingencies. As a leader it doesn't matter how well you feel you have presented the information or communicated an order, plan, tactic, or strategy. If your team doesn't get it, you have not kept things simple and you have failed. You must brief to ensure the lowest common denominator on the team understands.
Quote: It's not what you preach, it's what you tolerate. -Jocko Willink
Author: Jocko Willink
Themes: Leadership, Culture
My personal notes from the book
3. Entrepreneurism
Start-Up of You Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career
Summary
A typically book for anyone who wants to advance their careers, specifically if you are an entrepreneur and building your own business. This book answers three main questions: (1) How can I stand-out in the competitive world around me? (2) How do I go about planning to make myself competitive? and (3) How do I build and develop a give-and-take relationship with the network of people around me?
Principle: The team you build is the company you build.
Insight: Technology companies focus on learning over profitability in the early years to maximize revenue in the later years.
Quote: As humans we are all born entrepreneurs. When we were in caves, we were all self-employed, finding our own food, feeding ourselves. As civilization came, we suppressed it. We became "Labor" because they stamped us, "You are Labor". We forgot that we are entrepreneurs. -Mohammad Yunus
Author: Reid Hoffman
Themes: Entrepreneurism, Management, Starting and growing a business, Culture
My personal notes from the book
