On Tyson, Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got, and Keep Buying
Books that changed my life
Hello all!
Here is your weekly dose of books that changed my life.
1. Memoir
Undisputed Truth
Summary
This book is for everyone who grew up in the 1980s and 90s who loved watching Mike Tyson box. While Tyson is certainly a controversial figure, his story is worth knowing more about. And the thing is, the story we think we know, well, there is much more to it. Another shoutout to my friend Dave Mishkin for recommending this book and who also warned me that this book is…raw. Reader beware.
Insight: Look at the champions you've read about in all these books. At some time early in their careers a number of them suffered knockout losses. But they never gave up. They endured. That's why you are reading about them. The ones who lost and quit, well their demons will follow them to their grave because they had a chance to face them and they didn't. You have to face your demons, Mike, or they will follow you to eternity. The way you fight your fights will be the way that you live your life.
Principle: Doing something you hate to do like you love it is good conditioning for someone aspiring towards greatness.
Quote: Fear is the greatest obstacle to learning. But fear is your best friend. Fear is like fire. If you learn to control it, you let it work for you. If you don't learn to control it, it'll destroy you and everything around you. Like a snowball on a hill, you can pick it up and throw it or do anything you want with it before it starts rolling down, but once it rolls down and gets so big, it'll crush you to death. So one must never allow fear to develop and build up without having control over it, because if you don't you won't be able to achieve your objective or save your life. -Cus D'amato
Author: Mike Tyson
Themes: Memoir, Peak performance, Behavioral psychology, Sports
My personal notes from the book
2. Entrepreneurship
Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got: 21 Ways You Can Out-Think, Out-Perform, and Out-Earn the Competition
Summary
Jay Abraham is a must-read author for any entrepreneur. Some have referred to him as the Godfather of marketing (I reserve that title for Seth Godin). Regardless, this book should be a cornerstone to your marketing plan and how you think about marketing, in general.
Principle: When you limit your business to doing things the same way every other competitor of yours does, you can only produce modest, incremental gains - at best. At worst, you could easily lose ground.
Unique selling proposition (USP): to get prospects and clients to see you or your business as offering them a superior benefit or advantage that no other competitor offers them.
Business rule: There are only 3 ways to increase your business
Increase the number of clients
Increase the average size of the sale per client
Increase the number of times clients return and buy again
Author: Jay Abraham
Themes: Entrepreneurship, Growing a business, Starting a business
My personal notes from the book
3. Personal finance
Just Keep Buying: Proven Ways to Save Money and Build Your Wealth
Summary
This is a newer book on personal finance. It touches on all the common areas that are important to investing and financial planning with the author’s own spin. I think it is important to read about a variety of perspectives on personal finance, and identify what is most important and makes the most sense to you. There is always something new to learn.
Insight: So, in order to know when you can retire, you need to figure out what you will retire to.
Insight: Fear has a greater grasp on human action than does the impressive weight of historical evidence.
Quote: We begin our lives as growth stocks, but end our lives as value stocks. -Nick Maggiulli
Author: Nick Maggiulli
Themes: Personal finance, Wealth creation, Investing
